Benjamin Curtis is a writer, teacher, tour guide, and consultant on international development policy. He has written four books, on topics including Croatian history, the Habsburg dynasty, and global poverty. For more than a decade he was a professor at Seattle University, where he taught history and politics, and founded the university’s Poverty Education Center, a research and teaching institute dedicated to improving educational outcomes in low-resource communities. Since 2003 he has worked for Rick Steves’ Europe as a tour guide and guidebook researcher. He leads tours throughout Central and Eastern Europe, and has contributed to guidebooks on Scotland, England, Germany, Belgium, and Croatia.
During his years living in London, Benjamin worked as an advisor to the British government, designing evidence-based policy initiatives for the Department for Education and the Department for International Development. He has also consulted for the UK’s National Foundation for Educational Research on a variety of education projects in developing countries. He routinely helps non-governmental organizations around the globe with research, analysis, and program evaluation. He has been very fortunate to work in so many areas with positive social impact—and to have had fun doing it. These days, home is Prague, where he teaches, guides tours, writes books on global politics and history, and blogs at www.benjamincurtis.me.
