ABOUT THE BOOK
The Habsburgs are hands down the most important family in European history. At one point or another, they ruled almost everywhere, from Portugal to Poland, the Netherlands to Naples. This book explains how the Habsburgs held onto power for so many centuries, how they impacted art, social life, and politics, and how you can understand the development of modern Europe through the story of this one dynasty.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Besides being a regular contributor to Guide Collective, Benjamin Curtis is a writer and former professor of politics and history. He leads tours in the Habsburgs’ “home base,” namely the many countries in Central Europe that once belonged to their realm (Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, etc.). He wrote this book as a scholarly overview of the Habsburgs’ influence on European history, but it’s accessible enough so that anyone can follow the personalities, power struggles, and achievements of the family’s 800 years of preeminence.
You can hear Ben talking about European royal families on Rick Steves’ radio show, “Travel with Rick Steves”: https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/audio/radio/programs/program-408a
